Dercum disorder, also known as Adiposis Dolorosa, Anders' syndrome, and
Dercum-Vitaut syndrome, is a rare disorder marked by numerous, painful fatty
lipomas that affect mostly postmenopausal, obese middle-aged people. Even
though it is 20 times more common in women, males account for 16 percent of
confirmed cases, and it can affect individuals who are not obese.
Lipomas are
mostly found on the trunk and on the extremities that are similar to the trunk.
In contrast to ordinary lipomas, there is discomfort that can be extreme and
painful. Dercum disease is a chronic disease, which means it lasts for a long
time. Furthermore, it tends to be radical. Multiple, debilitating fatty masses;
(2) generalized obesity, typically in menopausal age; (3) fatigue and
fatigability; and (4) neurological disorders, including cognitive dysfunction,
depression, epilepsy, confusion, and dementia are the four cardinal signs of
this condition. The pain can last for hours, be intermittent or constant, and
get worse with movement. Generalized fatigue, depression, and irritability are
common symptoms of Dercum disease. Early congestive heart failure, myxedema (a
syndrome linked to extreme hypothyroidism), knee pain, paroxysmal flushing
spells, tremors, cyanosis, hypertension, headaches, and epistaxis are also
possible symptoms.
Dercum disease
is yet to be fully understood in terms of its origin and mechanism. The pain's
cause remains unknown, and the condition is best known as a set of signs rather
than a physiologic or metabolic method. Lipomas (fatty deposits) compress
nerves, resulting in fatigue and discomfort. Some cases in the literature have
indicated potential explanations for Dercum diseases, such as corticosteroid
use, endocrine dysfunction, or a genetic cause, as the disease appears to run
in some families. According to some experts, Dercum disease is an allergic
condition. No single source, however, has been established. Dercum disease has
been known to run in families, and it appears to be hereditary as an autosomal
dominant phenotype in some cases (meaning that one of a person's two copies of
the gene, inherited from one parent, is altered). The majority of confirmed
cases of this disease, however, are intermittent (the only case to occur in the
family).
Dercum disorder
does not have a "cure." Treatment for this disorder is currently
symptomatic, which means it works on one symptom at a time rather than the
whole condition. Weight loss, treatment for the most severe lipomas, and pain medications
are all treatments depending on the person. In certain cases, liposuction has
been used. Treatment options differ based on the point and source of the
illness. The quality of care is physical therapy, while antibiotics can be
prescribed for infections. Penicillin (amoxicillin) or, in the event of a
penicillin allergy, clindamycin or clarithromycin can be used to treat these
illnesses. In the treatment of lymphedema, diuretics play a minor role. Contact
